Species: Brachysomophis henshawi

The reptilian snake eel (Brachysomophis henshawi) is a heavy-jawed ambush predator that lies buried in sand with only its head visible. Its head is often orange-brown with fringed lips.

It grows to about 1 m and strikes passing fish from below with great speed. It can stay hidden in the same spot for long periods.

In the Philippines it is found on sandy slopes, where it is a prized muck-diving find.
