The spotfin lionfish (Pteropterus antennatus), long known as Pterois antennata, is a lionfish with dark-spotted membranes on its feathery pectoral fins and long, banded tentacles above its eyes.
It grows to about 20 cm and hides in caves and under ledges by day, coming out at dusk and night to hunt small fish and shrimps. Its spines are venomous and can cause very painful stings.
The spotfin lionfish is found across the Indo-Pacific, including the Philippines, where it lives on coral reefs and rocky areas. It is a relative of the red lionfish.
