Goniobranchus sp. 1

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Gastropoda
Order: Nudibranchia
Family: Chromodorididae
Genus: Goniobranchus
Species: Goniobranchus sp. 1

Goniobranchus sp. 1 is a chromodorid nudibranch that has not yet been formally described, so it has no species name. It is one of several unnamed Goniobranchus found in the Philippines.

Goniobranchus is a large genus of colourful dorids, many with red, white or purple patterns and a frilly mantle edge. This one is red and white, matching the animal shown in the book.

Little has been published about this particular species, so its diet, size range and distribution are not well known. Like its relatives, it carries its gills in a tuft on the rear of the back.

If you find one, good photos from above and the side, with notes on the site and depth, are useful records for an undescribed species.

It appears on page 121 of Nudibranchs of the Philippines.
