Trapania sp. 3

Trapania sp. 3 is a small dorid nudibranch from the family Goniodorididae. It has not yet been formally described, so it has no species name.

It has a cream body boldly patched with dark brown. Like all Trapania, it has a pair of curved finger-like appendages beside its rhinophores and another pair beside its gills, which makes the genus easy to recognise.

Trapania are usually found on sponges, sometimes in pairs, and most stay under about 1 cm long. Little is known about this particular species.

These are tiny, so a macro lens with a diopter helps. Search sponges slowly, and once you find one, it may stay in the same spot for some time.

It appears on page 59 of Nudibranchs of the Philippines.
